Common questions

Questions about this calculation

How do I know which number is the whole?

The whole is the reference amount you are comparing against. In “25 is what percent of 200,” 200 is the whole.

Why can the whole not be zero?

The formula divides by the whole. Division by zero is undefined, so there is no finite percentage answer.

Can the answer be over 100%?

Yes. If the part is larger than the whole, the result is greater than 100%. For example, 120 is 150% of 80.
